Jonathan Hicks

The debut exhibition of a young artist from Birmingham, Alabama underscores his use of photo-conceptual and performance-based techniques to comment on the history of racial identity in American popular culture.

Artist Statement

Segregation vernacular is a hook and my mental home has become the hook. “Just say no to interracial dating or marriage.” “If we date my parents will kill us, even a black president would have a black wife.” “Get over the fact your father doesn’t love you.” “Get over it you always be black or nigger, no one cares.” “America has a black President now, there is no point of being a black artist anymore.” These statements I rise above while I reflect the language I’ve always heard… seen.

So to what extent should the artist be willing to compromise artistic vision for clear communication? And if the artist works from within does he/she only repeat themselves? These are the main questions my photography and studio practice explore. Through inspecting my personal emotions, displacement and relationships I approach historical moments from my past, and our multicultural society, with a modern light and underlined double consciousness of hope.
