New Orleans has always been a place that attracts artists from other parts of the country and world. That influx, which has continued—arguably under exceptional circumstances—in the last five years, is the topic of this exhibition. Fresh Off the Turnip Truck examines the work of accomplished young artists who are all, to a degree, recent arrivals in the city.  Adrian Price is one of these artists.

Artist Statement:
In my work, I am interested in creating environments inspired by theatrical spaces, which throughout history have depicted the exaggerated and excessively dramatic.   I often use gestural painting as a medium within these environments as a way to create representational illusion “marked by pretense or artificiality of emotion”.

Recurring themes within my work include vulnerability, ideals of heroism and beauty, and the “spectacularization” of portraiture as seen in popular culture. I am interested in these environments depicting the passage of time, but without a beginning or ending. In my most recent installations, I have become interested in dramatizing mundane environments, decontextualizing them in some way. I hope to set up an uncanny kind of space, one which involves the viewer to become engaged in the act of looking without traditional rules, limits and security.
