New Orleans has always been a place that attracts artists from other parts of the country and world. That influx, which has continued—arguably under exceptional circumstances—in the last five years, is the topic of this exhibition. Fresh Off the Turnip Truck examines the work of accomplished young artists who are all, to a degree, recent arrivals in the cityRyan Watkins-Hughes is one of these artists.

 

Starting with a primarily conceptual standpoint, as opposed to
favoring a purely aesthetic approach, my formal devices change from
project to project to fit the particular goal or criteria.  I attempt
to communicate in whatever form is most true to the concept.  It is
the state which dictates the mode of presentation.  I integrate
drawings, ink jet prints, projections, text, photography,
installation, and other forms of interaction and hybridization.  I
maintain, however, certain recurring elements including found video
footage, drawings of cellular structures, code-based algorithmic
generation, montage or assemblage, and modular works that are combined
to create environmental installations.  With baby steps and blind
leaps, I create sketches and experiments to sift through later and
make finished works from.

I am drawn to a scientific, non-mystical, view of the universe.  I
embrace that there is no higher consciousness pulling strings and that
no afterlife awaits us.  I am aligned with a worldview which
investigates empirical relationships between elements and is informed
by objective observations of the physical world.  At the same time, it
is critical to embrace the limits of our collective intellect and
accept that complete comprehension of a systematic universe is
impossible.  To properly illuminate this dichotomy, it eventually
becomes necessary to scrutinize one’s relationship to mortality.  Many
of my works aim to ask the question: “Is it possible to truly accept and
embrace our own temporal nature?”
